HISTORY
1987.12.31 which ended on 31.12.1987 by combining the twelve villages of Otara village Pattuwa and Galigamuwa sub-office in Kegalle District Development Council. Galigamuwa Regional Council with an area of 147.8 was established on 01.01.1988 by Act No. 15 of 1987.
Mr. EMP Ekanayake was the special commissioner of the Galigamuwa local council which was under the control of a special commissioner at the time of its inception. The main office of the council was maintained in the Pitgaldeniya Mall building, while the twelve villages of Otara were maintained as Patthuwa and Galigamuwa Tutcheila.
The first local council polls held in May 1991 elected a 21-member People’s Representative Council to govern. The power of the first assembly was given to the United National Party and the People’s Representative Board consisted of 12 members from that party, 08 members from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and 01 independent member, and Mr. Ajith Uduwana was the first chairman.
In 1992, the twelve villages of Otara and the Galigamuwa sub-office were also centralized to the main office. After the dissolution of the first assembly on 12.07.1992 on January 28, it came under the control of a competent authority and the Galigamuwa Divisional Secretary became the competent authority.
A new assembly was elected by the local government polls held in March 1997. The governing power of that assembly was owned by the Public Front and the members board consisted of 11 members from that front, 9 members from the United National Party and 01 member from the Janata Vimukti Peramuna. Mr. H. Saman Jayasinghe became its chairman and the term of that assembly ended on 15.04.2002.
In the local government election held on 20.03.2002, the United National Party got the ruling power and the representative board consisted of 13 people from the United National Party, 07 people from the Public Peramuna and 01 person from the Janata Vimukti Peramuna. Mr. Ajith Uduwana became its chairman. The term of the council was 2006.04. Ended on the 15th.
In the local government election held on 20.03.2006, the Public Front gained power and 11 people from that front, 5 from the United National Party and 02 from the Janatha Vimukti Peramuna won. The new council started on 15.04.2006 and Mr. Saman Jayasinghe has been its chairman. Bulathkohupitiya Pradeshiya Sabha established on 15.04.2006 was taken over 10 Grama Seva Domains in Galigamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha limits. Accordingly, the number of 21 member positions was reduced to 18. On 04.09.2008, Chairman Saman Jayasinghe was elected as a member of the Provincial Council. Then Mr. Kalum Pathirana became the chairman of the council. The term of the council ended on January 05, 2011 and was dissolved.
From 05.01.2011 to 31.03.2011, the administration was placed under a special commissioner. The divisional secretary acted as the proper authority. On 10.03.2011, the United United Front gained power in the local government election and 13 people from that front and 05 from the United National Party were elected and the new assembly started on 01.04.2011 and Mr. Kalum Pathirana served as its chairman until 15.05.2015. From then until 26.03.2018, the Secretary of the Assembly acted as the competent authority. On 10.02.2018, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna gained power in the local government elections held for the first time in the divisional system, and 18 MPs were elected from that front, 10 MPs from the United National Party, 06 MPs from the United People’s Freedom Alliance and 01 MPs from the Janatha Vimukti Peramuna. Then Mr. Saman Jayasinghe became the chairman of the council. The term of the council ended on March 19, 2023 and was dissolved. The Secretary of the Assembly acted as the competent authority.
